Rohtang Pass

📍 51 km from ManaliFull day📅 May–Nov
SnowScenicPermit required

Rohtang Pass at 3,978m is the high point of the Manali–Leh Highway and the gateway to the stark, rain-shadow regions of Lahaul and Spiti. Even if you are not heading to Leh, driving up to Rohtang itself is one of the most popular day trips from Manali — partly for the views, partly for the snow that sits on the surrounding peaks even in July.

The pass separates the lush Kullu Valley (full of apple orchards and pine) from the cold desert of Lahaul. You cross it and the landscape changes completely within a few kilometres.

Highlights

  • Snow views year-round — even in summer the surrounding peaks are white
  • Gateway to Lahaul & Spiti — the pass opens the road to Keylong, Kaza, and Leh
  • Dramatic U-turns carved into the cliff face on the ascent
  • Views of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers converging in the valley below
  • Bhrigu Lake and Beas Kund visible from the pass on clear days

The permit system

The National Green Tribunal restricts the number of non-HP vehicles on the Rohtang road to reduce pollution. Permits are issued online at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. You need your vehicle registration, a photo ID, and entry fee (₹550 for most vehicles). Permits sell out — book a day or two in advance during peak season (June–August). If you are taking a taxi, the driver handles the permit; confirm this before hiring.

Road conditions and altitude

The Rohtang road is a mountain pass road — that means switchbacks, narrow stretches, and no guardrails in places. It is generally fine for regular cars but can get congested at weekends. The road often closes overnight and reopens at dawn. At 3,978m, altitude sickness is possible if you have just arrived in Manali. Spend at least one night at altitude before attempting Rohtang.

What is at the top

Rohtang itself is a rocky saddle with a few chai stalls and a lot of wind. The views on a clear day are exceptional — mountains in every direction, the Chandra River valley below, glaciers above. But cloud rolls in fast in the afternoons, especially in monsoon. Get there by 10 AM for the best chance of clear skies. Snow activities (sledging, snowscooter rides) are available near the top but can feel tourist-trap-y.

Getting there

  • Taxi from Manali: ₹1,500–2,500 round trip (share taxis available from Old Manali bus stand)
  • Self-drive: 51 km, 2–2.5 hours — road conditions vary, check before you go
  • HP-registered vehicles do not need a permit. All others must book at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in at least one day in advance
  • Permit fee: ₹550 for non-commercial vehicles. Limited permits issued per day

Best for

  • ·Those doing Manali–Leh highway
  • ·Snow seekers in summer
  • ·Landscape photographers
  • ·Anyone wanting to see a real Himalayan pass without trekking

Local tip

Start by 6 AM — permits have a vehicle cutoff and crowds build fast.
