Vashisht Hot Springs
Vashisht is a village 3 km north of Manali, just across a bridge from Old Manali, named after the Vedic sage Vashisht (guru of Ram). It has two things: a pair of ancient temples and natural hot sulphur springs that have been in use for centuries.
The springs are the draw. Hot, mineral-rich water — around 40–45°C — flows into stone-walled tanks right next to the temple complex. They are said to have healing properties and the water genuinely feels different from regular hot water: slippery, slightly eggy-smelling (sulphur), and strikingly warm against cold mountain air.
Highlights
- ✓Hot sulphur springs: separate public bathing tanks for men and women, plus private bathrooms (₹50–100)
- ✓Vashisht Rishi temple: stone structure with good carved panels, dedicated to the sage himself
- ✓Ram temple adjacent to the springs: smaller, with detailed woodwork in the pahadi style
- ✓Village lanes: apple trees, old stone houses, small family-run cafes with valley views
- ✓Evening atmosphere: warm light, quiet lanes, locals doing evening puja at the temples
Using the springs
The public tanks are free and open from around 7 AM to 9 PM. They are communal — swimwear is appropriate in the public tanks. Private rooms with a dedicated hot spring tap are ₹50–100 and give you more control over the experience. The water is continually replenished from the underground source, so mornings are when the tank water is freshest. The smell of sulphur fades after a few minutes of soaking. Bring a towel; none are provided.
The temples
The Vashisht Rishi temple is a compact stone structure with carved wooden panels on the doorframes — similar style to Hadimba but older-feeling and less crowded with tourists. Adjacent is a Ram temple with local families bringing offerings in the early morning. Both are active places of worship, not museum pieces. Take shoes off at the entrance and move quietly.
Combining with Old Manali
Vashisht and Old Manali are 15–20 minutes apart on foot (or 5 minutes by auto). Most visitors do both on the same half-day: walk up to Manu temple in Old Manali, come back down for lunch at one of the cafes, then cross the bridge to Vashisht for the springs and temples in the afternoon. This itinerary works well from 9 AM to 2 PM before Manali's midday crowds arrive.
Getting there
- →Auto from main Manali market: ₹60–80
- →Walk from Old Manali: cross the Manalsu bridge and follow the path uphill — 10–15 minutes
- →Taxi: ₹200–250 from main market
Best for
- ·Tired trekkers wanting a warm soak
- ·Temple and village culture
- ·Budget travellers (most of it is free)
- ·Anyone combining with an Old Manali half-day
Local tip
Morning is best — fresher water, fewer people.
